The film had an budget of $20 million.

Actors who played popular characters from previous Scary Movie films declined to the chance to be apart of the fifth instalment. Actors like Anna Faris (who played Cindy Campbell) declined due to pregnancy. Other actors such as Regina Hall (who played Brenda Weeks)and Kevin Hart opted to work on other projects.

Filming began on 4th September 2012 and finished on 25th October 2012.

The film was mainly short in Atlanta, Georgia and partly in Los Angeles.

The initial story line behind the film was to rein-act horror movie, Scream 4 but because the film did not perform well at the box office they chose not to go with this plan.

The film 'The Evil Dead' is spoof in the film despite only being released a week before Scary Movie 5.

This is the only film in the entire franchise that didn't feature any main characters.

The film was not shown to critics prior to release.
